science for poor kids

It occurred to me yesterday that someone ought to be providing the sort of visiting scholar, hands-on, expert in the school science education to underprivileged school that is provided for schools that can afford it. The question I'm still pondering: where would the money come from? There must be quite a bit, for supplies, class development, and at least a few salaries. A grant might provide starter funds, but could this sort of venture be self-sustaining?
